Dog Friendly Holidays in the Peak District

Although the Peak District is one of the smallest national parks in the UK, measuring just 20 miles wide by 30 miles long (32 by 48km) it offers an untold wealth of natural attractions. From the high point of Kinder Scout to the lovely river valleys, there are green dales, heather covered moorland, stately homes and delightful towns and villages making it a wonderful place for a dog friendly holiday.

The Peak District is very popular with hill walkers and cyclists who enjoy the challenge, climbing through the steep gorges such as at Winnat's Pass. It is also the start of the 250 miles (410km) Pennine Way at Edale, with some tough hill walking in the locality. This limestone region has some fascinating caverns with unique Blue John stone which is mined here for jewellery and bowls.

There are plenty of dog friendly hotels and places to stay in the Peak District. Buxton has some Victorian hotels and bed and breakfast establishments which welcome pets. You can even enjoy an evening at the theatre at Buxton Opera House! Better still, enjoy walking through the extensive botanical gardens or enjoy afternoon tea in the Pavilion with your dog at your feet. Buxton is known for its spa waters and a fountain runs freely into a public trough near the Crescent. Fill your water bottle here and let your dog enjoy some of these world famous spa waters with healing properties.

Beyond the towns there are some excellent dog friendly walks along the many rivers such as the River Wye, the Derwent and the Dove. The walk along the River Dove in Dovedale is very popular and is a pleasant amble with a dog. The walk crosses the wide river on stepping stones which are a challenge for pedestrians and fun for dogs. The river is also very shallow and many dogs enjoy cooling off on a hot day. This shady river is also famous for its trout so keen fishermen enjoy this quiet area.

The most famous country home in the Peak District is Chatsworth, still the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire . You can tour the Palladian mansion with its priceless treasures or explore the gardens, but if you have a dog accompanying you, take a walk in the extensive deer park . The hillside is beautiful and you can walk for miles. Chatsworth often hosts events as diverse as horse trials, pop concerts, show jumping, and brass band festivals. Sheep dog trials are also very popular spectator sports in the Peak District. The skills of these intelligent and highly trained border collie dogs is quite amazing to see and provides excellent entertainment for all dog lovers.
