Enjoying Dog Friendly Walks

Although walking a dog has to be a daily routine whatever the weather, the real pleasure of having a pet is getting out in the open air for some healthy exercise together. Make a point of researching some local walks close to where you live, and take a least one long walk each week. Dog friendly walks in the UK can be found in parks, along canal towpaths and on National Trust parkland. Dog walks in Yorkshire can take place on the open moors or along country lanes. Dog friendly beaches can be found in Devon and Dorset where you will probably have the beach all to yourself during the winter months.

It is well known that having a dog is beneficial to your health, both for the companionship and the healthy outdoor exercise. Maximize that benefit by taking pleasurable dog friendly walks as often as possible.

The Rules about a Lead

Ideal places for dog walking in the UK include public footpaths which may well cross farmland. Keep your dog on a lead at all times. Under the rules of Open Access your dog must be kept on a short lead of less than 2 metres at any time when near farm animals. The use of a lead is also compulsory between 1 March and 31 July. This rule is to protect ground-nesting birds and other young wildlife. It also protects your pet from other dogs and may avoid it being shot if seen by a farmer who is concerned about his sheep and lambs being stressed.

Responsible Dog Friendly Walks

Carry a bag and clear up after your pet, disposing of it responsibility in a waste bin. This is particularly important in parks where children play on the grass, and on public footpaths. Do not leave any plastic bag in a field or tucked in a wall. Plastic bags can be eaten by animals who may suffocate.

Close all gates behind you. It is common sense and a courtesy to do so, even if others disregard the request. Livestock are a farmer's livelihood and are valuable if lost or injured.

Do not drop litter and empty cans or discard glass bottles. Most of our waste does not decompose easily, and glass will eventually get broken, causing untold suffering to wildlife.

Healthy Dog Walks

Make sure your dog friendly walk includes plenty of rest if it is hot weather. Let your dog drink small amounts of water often and take a rest occasionally in the shade or in a cool breeze. If your dog gets an insect sting, make sure the sting is not left in your dog. Scrape the area with a fingernail or credit card then apply cool water to reduce any swelling. After a long walk, check your dog for any ticks which may have attached themselves. They look like a small pea or scab on the skin and should slowly be extricated using tweezers to ensure they are removed whole. If possible, ask your vet for advice.
